Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to reunite with close family members by sponsoring them for permanent residency. This process helps families stay together and build a future in Canada.

Eligibility Requirements for Sponsor

To sponsor a relative, you must:

Be at least 18 years old
Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
Live in Canada (or plan to return when the relative arrives)
Be able to financially support the relative without social assistance
Sign an undertaking to provide financial support for a specific period

How to apply

Sponsoring your eligible relatives for permanent residency involves two main stages:

You submit a sponsorship application to show your commitment and eligibility as a sponsor.
Your relatives apply for permanent residence in Canada.

Both applications must be submitted together in one package, the sponsorship application and your relatives permanent residence application.

Documents You Need

For the Sponsor, Here is a list of required documents to sponsor a relative:

Proof of Canadian citizenship or PR status (passport, PR card)
Proof of income (tax documents, Option C printout from CRA)
Signed Undertaking Form and Sponsorship Agreement
Identity documents (e.g., national ID, utility bill for address proof)
Completed IMM forms from IRCC

For the Relative:

Valid passport or travel document
Birth certificate
Applicants must have medical insurance from a Canadian company valid for at least one year
Proof of relationship (family register, birth records)
Medical exam results (done by IRCC-approved doctor)
Police certificates from countries lived in for 6+ months since age 18
Photos (for PR card processing)

Sponsor an Orphaned Relative to Canada

Under Canada’s Family Class Sponsorship Program, you may be eligible to sponsor certain orphaned family members to become permanent residents. You can sponsor your,

Orphaned brother or sister
Orphaned nephew or niece
Orphaned grandchild

You can sponsor an orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild only if they meet all of these requirements:

Be under 18 years of age
Be unmarried and not in a common-law relationship
Have both parents deceased
Be a blood relative or adopted relative

❗You cannot sponsor them if one or both parents are still alive, their whereabouts are unknown, or if someone else is caring for them.
